Dogs are just the absolute best—they comfort us when we’re feeling down and are happy to cheer us on during happy times. They are our companions and little balls of unconditional love. However, dogs (especially puppies) are known to explore with their mouths, and some of them tend to chew or bite on things that they really shouldn’t. 

This includes plants. Some dogs will eat leaves, chew on stems and otherwise ingest plants. Most of the time, this is fine, but there are some plants you should avoid having available to them.

This is why it’s important to distinguish which plants are safe to be kept at home with your pets and which should be avoided. In terms of safe alternatives, some house plants such as the dwarf palm and spider plant are safe for doggos.

Some popular houseplants such as philodendrons and peace lilies are harmful to dogs when ingested. They are known to have insoluble calcium oxalates that can cause oral irritation, pain, intense burning of the mouth, tongue, and lips. They can also cause excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing in both dogs and cats. 

Another toxic houseplant that you may not know about is the jade plant (also known as the Japanese rubber plant or dwarf rubber plant). This is a super popular plant for pet owners, especially if they don’t have a green thumb, because they are very easy to care for. Still, unfortunately for pet owners, this plant can cause vomiting, depression, and a loss of coordination for your sweet dog if they nibble on it.

The snake plant can also be dangerous when ingested by your pup as it has a high presence of saponin which can cause your pet to become nauseous and experience vomiting and diarrhea.
