Big Mutts – Dog is Good
I like big mutts and I cannot lie. As the saying goes, big mutts are the best! July 31st is National Mutt Day. Time to celebrate all the mutts and mixed breeds that make our lives complete. What constitutes a mutt? A mutt is any dog that is a combination of different breeds, rather than one identifiable breed. Bonus for owning a big mutt? They live longer! What? Yes! This phenomenon is called “hybrid vigor”, and it simply means that, due to a richer genetic pool, mutts are usually stronger, hardier, and live longer than purebred dogs. Let’s celebrate this special day devoted to MUTTS!
Adopt Don’t Shop
While there are tens of thousands of good dog breeders, adopting a dog from a local shelter will save two lives. The dog you adopt and the dog that takes their spot. Adopted pets are just as loving, intelligent, and loyal as purchased pets. Adopting a pet from an animal shelter is much less expensive than buying a pet from a breeder. Usually when you adopt a pet, the cost of spay/neuter, first vaccinations (and sometimes even microchipping!) is included in the adoption price. In addition, if we adopt pets instead of buying them from a breeder, we can reduce the number of animals euthanized and give them a forever loving home instead. Over 670,000 dogs are euthanized yearly in shelters.
Donations
If adoption is not an option for you currently, there are other ways to help big mutts in your area. Check with your local shelter, but here are some top items you can donate to help save lives:
- Unopened pet food
- Cleaning Supplies
- New dog toys
- Raised cot beds
- Harnesses and leashes
- Pet carriers
- Food bowls
- Old sheets and towels
- Monetary donation
Volunteer
Volunteering for your local animal shelter is one of the best ways to help big mutts. Dog lovers are always needed and welcomed to spend time with the pups waiting for the forever home. Most animal shelters welcome volunteers who can help walk dogs, clean cages, and give attention and care to animals in need. Just playing with homeless dogs can improve their chances of being adopted—as most families who want to adopt a dog are looking for a sociable, loving, playful dog.
