As fear continues to escalate in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic, declared by the World Health Organization, pet owners are starting to worry about the health of their furry family members as well. This can be seen as dogs wearing face masks is going viral on social media. The question on everyone’s mind is can my dog contract coronavirus?

As of now, no cases of coronavirus have been reported in pets or companion animals. Furthermore, while pets can contract certain types of coronavirus, this particular strain COVID-19 is not believed to be a threat, according to the AKC.

However, as a precautionary measure, it’s advised that anyone who is ill with  COVID-19 have limited contact or refrain completely from caring for pets until more information is known. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends having another family member or friend take care of your pet.

The COVID-19 virus is spread via human to human contact, according to microbiologists at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and while research is still continuing to be done regarding the link between COVID-19 virus and pets, it is best to keep hands clean by washing them often and refrain from letting pets lick you.
