Hero Sheepdog Fights Off Coyotes Terrorizing Sheep Farm

20-month-old Decatur Great Pyrenees, Casper, repelled a band of coyotes who were posing a threat to the farmer’s sheep farm. Eight coyotes were killed during the more than 30-minute-long fight, and Casper was left bleeding, with his skin peeled off and a portion of his tail severed.

The brave sheepdog killed eight of the coyotes and chased the other three off the battlefield, but he didn’t return home right away. Wierwiller posted a request for help in locating Casper on social media. Two days later, Casper came home by himself to the family he had risked his life to protect.

“He was kinda looking at me like, ‘Boss, stop looking at how bad I look, just take care of me,’” Wierwiller said. “It looked like a coyote grabbed his skin and peeled it right off.”

Casper was taken to an emergency veterinarian, according to a Facebook post by Wierwiller. The veterinarians treated the open neck wound in the hopes that it would prevent infection.

Since his near-death experience, Casper has been “a little tentative about everything,” according to Wierwiller, but the vets have suggested that with any hope, Casper might not even need any skin grafts. As word of Casper’s bravery has spread, more than $15,000 has already been raised for his medical bills through a GoFundMe campaign.
