Homemade Diabetic Dog Treat Recipe and Instructions
If your dog has been diagnosed with diabetes, you are likely feeling overwhelmed. It can be extremely daunting to come to terms with this disease, but you need to educate yourself quickly about the treatments available and best diet for your pup. Perhaps this homemade diabetic dog treat recipe will fit into your dog’s ideal diet.
The best way to educate yourself is by having a conversation with your veterinarian. They can get you started on the new journey that you and your pet will be embarking on. Treating diabetes isn’t just about diet change – it’s going to be a lifestyle change for you and your dog.
Proper nutrition plays a huge part in the treatment and control of this disease. Working with a canine nutritionist is the best thing that you can do for your dog after his diagnosis. An expert trained in canine nutrition will evaluate your dog’s health and body condition. They will help you create a diet plan based on this information.
Maybe you’ve been dealing with canine diabetes for years.
This homemade diabetic dog treat recipe may offer a great way to add some flavor to your pet’s diet. Not only are they healthy, these treats are also soft with a spongy texture. They’re ideal for older pets with dental issues or dogs that do not like the texture of traditional biscuit treats.

Homemade Diabetic Dog Treat Recipe
Ingredients
- 1.5 pounds of chicken liver (you can substitute beef liver or any other kind of liver available to you)
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 eggs
Preheat your oven to 350°. Before you begin preparing this homemade diabetic dog treat recipe, you’ll also need to line a 9 X 13 cake pan with parchment paper.
A food processor is not necessary in order to make this recipe, but it will make things a whole lot easier. If you have a food processor, place all of the liver into it and pulse until it’s smooth. If you don’t have one, you’ll have to puree the liver by hand.
Next, add the flour and eggs to the liver mixture and stir until it’s completely blended. The mixture will be very runny, like a batter. Spread the batter evenly in the pan you’ve prepared with parchment paper.
Bake this homemade diabetic dog treat recipe in your 350° oven for about 15 minutes. As I mention in the video guide above, when these treats are finished cooking they’ll have a spongy texture.
Once cooled, you should be able to remove the ‘loaf’ from the parchment paper easily. You can use a pizza cutter to cut the loaf into small squares. As I explain in my video, one of the best things about making your own dog treats is that you can cut them into appropriate sizes for your pet. As you’ll see, I cut some bigger squares for our Labrador and some smaller squares for our Beagle mix.
Leftover treats can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 10 days. You can also freeze these treats in an airtight container, and they’ll keep for about 3 months. I even feed these treats to my dog when they’re still frozen on hot days. It gives them a fun – and delicious – way to cool off.
