How To Make Homemade Dog Pill Pockets – Top Dog Tips
At some point, every dog will need to take medication for one reason or another. Some dogs are so food motivated that it’s easy to hide their pills in virtually anything. On the other hand, it can be nearly impossible to get other dogs to take their meds. Homemade dog pill pockets smell like human food, and they’re sure to entice even the pickiest pups.
Pill pocket treats are exactly what they sound like: small treats in the shape of a little pocket that you can easily hide a pill or capsule in. They are malleable, so you can stick the pill inside and cover it over completely with the treat.
Commercial pill pockets are made with artificial ingredients, preservatives and artificial flavors. While they may work for some dogs, they won’t be appetizing to picky pets. Homemade dog pill pockets are healthier, more appetizing and easy to make. Plus, they’re much cheaper than the commercial options.
How To Make Homemade Dog Pill Pockets
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp. peanut butter
- 1 tbsp. low-fat milk
- 2 tbsp. flour
Directions
Making these dog pill pockets is very simple. Just combine the above ingredients in a bowl and mix until it forms a dough. The dough should be malleable, but not sticky. If it’s a little bit sticky, add a couple more pinches of flour.
Break off small pieces of the dough to form into pill pockets. As you will see in my video guide above, it’s easy to stick the pill in and cover it over with the dough. Refrigerate the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 7 days. You can also freeze leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
This recipe should make about 24 pill pockets. Each treat contains about 7 calories. You can feel good about feeding your pup a treat that is made with whole food ingredients and is low in calories. Even if your dog needs to eat a few each day, it won’t inundate his diet with unnecessary calories.
