Martha Stewart’s Disappointing New Pet Food – Truth about Pet Food

The press release states “Stewart is leveraging her passion for home cooking and healthy nutrition, as well as her passion for pets, to create Martha Stewart Pet Food. ‘My pets mean the world to me, which is why I insist on feeding them delicious whole ingredients like real chicken, fish, cage-free eggs, and nutrient-dense grains and vegetables,’ Stewart said.”

But Martha Stewart’s new pet food line is not made with all whole food ingredients (that she “insists” on feeding her own pets). Instead, her pet foods are highly processed made with feed grade ingredients. And, her ‘new’ pet foods are not new formulas…they are disappointingly similar to many other brands of pet foods (but strikingly more expensive).

The Martha Stewart pet food line consists of three dog foods and two cat foods, only dry/kibble pet food options. All five pet foods include feed grade processed ingredients such as meat meals, pea protein, dried egg product and multiple dried vegetables. When these processed ingredients are processed again in the pet food they become an ultra-processed pet food.

As if that isn’t disappointing enough, the Martha Stewart pet foods are strikingly similar to many other feed grade pet foods (that are far less expensive).

Dog Food

The first few ingredients of the Martha Stewart Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Dry Dog Food are:

“Chicken, Chicken Meal, Barley, Brown Rice, Pea Protein, Chicken Fat.”

A 4 pound bag sells for $24.99 on Chewy.com ($6.24 per pound).

The first few ingredients of a very similar dog food – Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Adult Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Dry Dog Food – are:

“Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Barley, Oatmeal, Pea Starch, Flaxseed, Chicken Fat.”

This pet food is sold on Chewy.com for $14.98 for a 5 pound bag ($2.99 per pound).

Cat Food

The first few ingredients of the Martha Stewart Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Dry Cat Food are:

“Chicken, Chicken Meal, Pea Protein, Dried Chickpeas, Brown Rice, Chicken Fat.”

Chewy.com sells this pet food for $21.99 for a 4 pound bag ($5.49 per pound).

Fellow celebrity chef Rachael Ray has a very similar cat food, with a much smaller price tag.

The ingredients of Rachael Ray Nutrish Natural Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Dry Cat Food are:

Chicken, Chicken Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Brown Rice, Brewer’s Rice, Dried Peas, Poultry Fat

Chewy.com sells the very similar Nutrish cat food for $7.29 for a 3 pound bag ($2.43 per pound).

The Martha Stewart feed grade ultra-processed pet foods were double the price of very similar ultra-processed feed grade cat and dog foods.

By comparison – Caru Pet Food makes a human grade (human grade ingredients and human food manufacturing standards) minimally processed wet dog food that sells on Chewy.com for $5.44 per pound. A human grade ingredient pet food for almost a dollar a pound less than Martha Stewart’s feed grade pet food.

How disappointing.
