National Dog Rescue Day – Dog is Good

When it comes to our four-legged friends, they improve our lives leaps and bounds.  On May 20th, National Dog Rescue Day celebrates the dogs who were rescued and adopted and made members of the family. Rescue dogs often overcome extreme obstacles and yet provide comfort, security, and friendship as family pets.  By adopting a dog at a shelter, you are saving two lives!  The pet you adopt and a homeless animal that can be rescued because of space you make available.

National Rescue Dog Day History

National Rescue Dog Day seeks to raise awareness about all the dogs waiting to be adopted in shelters. This day aims to encourage adoption, promote humane education, and encourage pet owners to spay/neuter their pets. It highlights the mutual benefit of owning a rescued dog. Rescued dogs are provided with a loving home, and in return, they can provide comfort and security to their owners. National Rescue Dog Day was created in 2018 by Tails That Teach, an organization devoted to inspiring kindness to pets and peers.

Facts

  • Approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters in the US every year according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
  • Only 50% of shelter dogs are adopted.
  • Each year, approximately 1.5 million animals are euthanized.
  • About twice as many animals enter shelters as strays compared to the number that are relinquished by their owners.

What Can You Do?

This is an easy one!  Adopt a shelter dog.  If you can’t adopt, then volunteer.  If you can’t volunteer, donate supplies (blankets, toys, leashes), food for the pet pantry, or simply donate money.  Have the kids set up a lemonade stand and fundraise for the local shelter.  Fostering a shelter dog can save lives. Many dogs abandoned to shelters benefit from socialization, or would just thrive better away from the shelter environment. Also, spay and neuter your pets so you don’t contribute to the over population in shelters. Lastly, educate young children about the importance of kindness, unconditional love, and responsible care of all animals.

No Dog Left Behind

Dog is Good for Good is our foundation to create awareness and provide grants to organizations whose programs highlight the power of the dog-human bond and the positive benefits each on on the other.  Our No Dog Left Behind tee is a great message for dog rescues and foster organizations.  It is a tribute to those concerned with finding forever home for pets in need.

Grateful

Rescue dogs are so grateful for the opportunity to have a warm bed, a bowl of food and the love of a human. Why not take some time on National Rescue Dog Day and spend some quality time together at the park, on a walk, taking a car ride or even just snuggling on the couch watching your favorite dog movie.
