PetSafe Drinking Fountains for Dogs and Cats – Top Dog Tips
Keeping your dog hydrated is essential for his overall health and well-being. You can’t feel badly if you’ve forgotten to fill your pet’s bowl once or twice – every pet owner has done it. Instead, do something to prevent it from happening again. Automatic dog water fountains, like these PetSafe Drinking Fountains, can hold a lot of water and keep it from becoming stagnant.
Most high quality dog water fountains have replaceable filters that remove impurities from the drinking water. They also aerate the water to keep it fresh at all times. Stagnant water is a breeding ground for bacteria, which exposes your pet to certain health risks.
Just like us, the majority of a dog’s body weight is water. Unfortunately, some dogs don’t drink enough water throughout the day. This can lead to dehydration. Fresh, constantly circulating water provided by a pet fountain will entice your pet to drink extra water every day.
PetSafe drinking fountains come in a variety of sizes to meet the needs of most pets. I tried 3 different fountains with our menagerie of pets, to see which fountain worked the best in certain situations. Keep reading to find out which drinking fountain would be the best option to meet your needs.
PetSafe Drinking Fountains Review
The general rule of thumb is that every dog should drink about 1 ounce of water for every 1 pound of their body weight each day.
Keep in mind that there are many variables that effect this. If your dog is extremely active, he’ll need to drink more water. Likewise, if the weather is hot, your canine companion will need access to more water. Be sure to check with your vet if you are concerned about your dog’s water intake for any reason.
PetSafe Drinkwell 1-Gallon Pet Fountain
This fountain is available in 3 sizes:
- 1-Gallon – $54.95
- ½ Gallon – $42.95
- 2-Gallon – $74.95
In my video review above you can see the adjustable flow control that allows you to control how fast the water flows. You also have the option of turning it down low or shutting it off completely if you have a particularly timid animal or for quieter operation.
These fountains have replaceable carbon filters that refresh the water and a replaceable foam filter that catches pet hair and debris to keep the water clean. My favorite thing about PetSafe drinking fountains is that they are top-rack dishwasher safe (except for the pumps). They are also specifically designed with no hard-to-reach spaces to be easy-to-clean with warm water and non-toxic soap.
PetSafe Seaside Stainless Pet Fountain
This fountain holds 60 ounces of water, which is just a bit shy of ½ gallon. It is a good size for cats and small dogs, but I wouldn’t recommend it for large dogs or multiple pets.
The Drinkwell fountain above has running water. In contrast, the soft bubbling water of the Seaside fountain is much quieter. This means it would be a better option for timid pets, and it also prevents splashing water from getting onto your floors.
Unlike the Drinkwell fountain, this one is made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is more hygienic, rust-resistant, durable and scratch-resistant than plastic. This pet drinking fountain is also top-rack dishwasher safe (except the pump) and specifically designed with no hard-to-reach spaces.
A replaceable carbon filter refreshes the water, and there is a foam filter to catch pet hair and debris to keep your pet’s water clean. The PetSafe Seaside Stainless Pet Fountain measures 10.6” W x 5.1” H. You can purchase this fountain for the same price as the 1/2 gallon Drinkwell fountain, $42.95 on Amazon.
PetSafe Creekside Ceramic Pet Fountain
Like the Seaside fountain, this fountain holds 60 ounces of water, which is just a bit shy of ½ gallon. Again, it is a good size for cats and small dogs, but I wouldn’t recommend it for large dogs or multiple pets.
The ceramic is made without lead, and it is easy-to-clean and scratch-resistant. These PetSafe drinking fountains are also top-rack dishwasher safe (except the pump) and specifically designed with no hard-to-reach spaces.
Like the Seaside fountain, the soft bubbling water of the Creekside fountain is much quieter. This means it would be a better option for timid pets, and it also prevents splashing water from getting onto your floors.
A replaceable carbon filter refreshes the water, and there is a foam filter to catch pet hair and debris to keep your pet’s water clean. The PetSafe Seaside Stainless Pet Fountain measures 10.2” W x 5.5” H. This option is a little bit more expensive than the 1/2 gallon Drinkwell fountain and the Seaside fountain, $64.95 on Amazon.
These PetSafe drinking fountains are all good options. They are a bit pricey, especially when compared to traditional water bowls, but they also offer the benefits of fresh, filtered water and making the water more enticing for your pet. If you’re interested in a PetSafe drinking fountain for your dog and/or cat, it really comes down to the size you need and design that you like the best.
