Testing It With My Dogs
It can be difficult to find products designed for the largest dog breeds. These giant dogs need products that are more durable, higher quality and much larger than those made for small, medium and large breeds. The Frisco XXL Dog Crate from Chewy is specifically made for the largest dogs.
Metal dog crates are typically the first type of crate thought of by perspective pet owners. They’re a durable type of crate that can be used in a variety of situations. These types of crates usually fold flat for easy transporting and storage, and they’re often recommended by veteran pet owners and experts in the pet industry alike.
I prefer these crates, because they are also easy to clean and can’t be ruined by chewers, which makes them ideal for puppies. Metal wire crates aren’t escape-proof, as an especially rambunctious dog may be able to get the walls of the crate to fold in. In order to combat this issue, a lot of pet owners use cable zip ties to ensure the crate doesn’t fold up unexpectedly.
The Frisco XXL Dog Crate is a 2-door option for the largest dogs. If you like this crate, but need it in a smaller size, check out Chewy’s website for all of the other Frisco crate options. Frisco XXL Dog Crate for Large Dogs Review
This crate is made from steel wire with an electro-coat finish that is corrosion, rust and fade resistant.When assembled, it measures 54″L x 36.5″W x 44.75″H. It is suitable for dogs with a maximum height of 40.75″ and a maximum length of 50″.
As you can see in the photo above, my 80-pound Labrador has more than enough space inside this crate. It is made for giant breeds, like St. Bernards, Mastiffs and Newfoundlands.
Assembly is required, but it isn’t difficult. There are long pins that slide through each corner of the crate to keep it stable. The company does recommend having 2 people to assemble the crate, but I was able to do it myself in about 20-25 minutes. It would be easier with 2 people, as each side panel is heavy and awkward to maneuver on your own.
Like most metal wire crates, the Frisco XXL Dog Crate has a removable plastic tray for easy cleaning. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a divider like other similar products. Dividers are necessary if you’re buying a crate for a large/giant breed puppy. You can divide the crate into a smaller area and adjust the size as your pup grows.
Another drawback to this crate is that it doesn’t fold down in one piece. Most metal wire crates fold down for easy storage or transport. Because of it’s size, this Frisco crate can’t do that. It does come apart, but you’d have to disassemble and reassemble it every time you wanted to put it away or take it with you on a trip.

This crate has 2 doors: one in the front and one on the side. Both doors feature 3 slide-bolt latches (pictured above) that keep the doors securely shut. This design makes it extremely difficult for your dog to slide the latches out and open the door from the inside of the crate.
Some owners do not like metal wire crates, because they believe they look too much like a cage. They also worry that their dog may break one of the wires and injure himself. If your dog is a Houdini that tries to escape from any enclosure, a metal crate like this may not be the best choice for him.
I would NOT recommend this big dog crate for a dog that tries to escape!
However, if your dog isn’t too rambunctious you won’t need to worry about him getting hurt in this crate. He would have to be extremely powerful to bend the bars.
You can buy a dog bed that fits on the floor of this Frisco crate, but it will be an additional cost. If you’re interested in buying this crate, you can purchase it for $134.99 on Chewy.com.
It’s reasonably priced compared to other similar products, and I do believe that it’s a good value for the money. Metal wire crates are one of the most affordable options for dog crates, and they are good choice for most dogs.
