What is the Treat List?
Pet food and treat manufacturers tell pet owners a lot of things, making many claims on their labels and websites. Some will claim their products are just like human food, some will claim organic or humanely raised meats. It all sounds great for your pet, IF that company is being honest.
One of the problems pet food/treat consumers face is regulatory authorities rarely (if ever) check to see if those claims are true. The FDA and State pet food authorities not only allow manufacturers to make marketing claims without verification, regulatory also allows manufacturers to use dangerous waste ingredients without disclosure to pet owners.
The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine stated: “we do not believe that the use of diseased animals or animals that died otherwise than by slaughter to make animal food poses a safety concern and we intend to continue to exercise enforcement discretion.”
In other words, pet food and treat manufacturers can be using horrible quality ingredients while telling pet owners they use ‘only the finest ingredients’.
The Treat List takes a very different approach. We tell pet owners information about a company that we have personally verified.
We start with a long list of questions regarding quality of ingredients, manufacturing, testing, and packaging. Then we ask each company to provide evidence of their claims.
All treat manufacturers included in the List are using human grade quality ingredients, the companies provided us with hundreds of documents evidencing each and every ingredient is food quality.
If the company made claims of organic ingredients or humanely raised meats, those verification documents were required too.
We cannot guarantee that every pet owner will be satisfied with with all of these treat manufacturers, we can only state that based on the information and verification documents they provided us – we trust these companies to purchase treats from for our own pets.
The 2023 Treat List is my (Susan Thixton) ‘list’ of treats I trust to give my own pets because each of the companies were fully transparent and provided evidence of their quality.
Where are the treats available?
Almost all brands are available in the US. Nine brands are available in Canada, two are solely available in Canada. Only a small number of brands are available outside of North America.
Most brands sell directly to consumers from their website. Some brands sell through independent pet food stores.
Types of treats in the 2023 Treat List.
There is a wide variety of types of treats included in the Treat List. Treats include cookie type, single ingredient dehydrated, cheese puffs and even actual cheese treats.
Some of the manufacturers are small, some are very small. Some own their own manufacturing facility, a few operate their pet treat business out of their home. All have a dedication to making high quality treats using only human grade ingredients for the pets they serve.
Included in the Treat List are some of the pet food manufacturers that were included in the 2023 (Food) List. There are 16 treat manufacturers that are new to TruthaboutPetFood.com’s List.
How were brands selected for consideration?
Some of the treats I was already familiar with, purchased their treats to give to my own pets. Some were referred by friends, some were discovered from an Internet search, and one actually reached out to me asking to be considered.
No company pays a fee to be considered or included in the List. No company provides us with free products or gifts, we purchase the treats just like you do.
Why are some brands excluded?
I am a very picky pet food/treat consumer. I will ONLY give my own pets (5 cats, 2 dogs) human grade ingredient food and treats. I cannot count the number of times I’ve stopped people from giving my dogs a treat. They were only trying to be kind, but…I won’t let my pets eat feed grade treats (or food).
Some brands may be excluded because I was not familiar with them, others may be excluded because I am familiar with them but I disagree with their customer service methods, or they are a member of a trade association that works against pet owners. I do not/will not disclose specific information why any brand is excluded.
How much does the 2023 Treat List cost?
Cost to purchase the Treat List is variable, depending on the support you want/can afford to provide. Price varies from $5.00 to $50.00. No matter the price you purchase, the 2023 Treat List is the same.
Why charge for the List?
TruthaboutPetFood.com and our sister website AssociationforTruthinPetFood.com (and myself personally) actively advocate for the rights of pet owners and we are 100% consumer supported. The List, Petsumer Report, and membership into our consumer association is our only income. We accept no money from pet food and no advertising. Simply put, we charge for the List to support the pet food advocacy work we do.
