Veterinarian Helps The Homeless Care For Their Pets Free of Charge
In 2011, California-based vet, Dr. Kwane Stewart, decided to do something nice. He voluntarily set up a table with a local soup kitchen, in order to see if any homeless people needed free vet care for their pets. In just one day, Dr. Stewart treated 15 animals. It was a very high number, and it was the turning point in his life when he decided to help those less fortunate.
Dr. Stewart has since been awarded the February GoFundMe Hero honor for his work, and as he told the site, “That first experience was one of the most rewarding moments for me. When you give back, there is something you get in return that feels much larger. I knew I wanted to keep doing it.”
Since his afternoon of volunteering, Dr. Stewart has been prolific in his good works – traveling all across the state of California in search of animals who need free medical assistance.
This generous vet has spent all of his free time roaming down alleyways and under overpasses with his medical bag, treating animals. He’s helped all kinds of dogs and cats – and even once assisted a python.
As Dr. Stewart revealed to Today, he normally treats ear infections, fleas, and mild arthritis – something that can often be treated with a shot. However, there have been some occasions when surgery is required – something that costs a little more than Dr. Stewart can manage out of pocket.
As he told GoFundMe, “I don’t ever want to have to turn anybody away. The look on people’s faces when they get their pets back, especially after a surgery or a life-saving procedure — those are moments I’ll remember forever.”
In order to raise the money for these kinds of expensive procedures, in September 2019, Dr. Stewart started a GoFundMe page.
He wrote on the site, “All donations will go to the care of these pets and will surely make a difference in the owner’s lives as well.”
So far, he’s raised more than $47,000 – a number well above his original $10,000 goal.
Dr. Stewart has also partnered with an animal hospital in LA. He is hoping that others will be inspired to volunteer to help underprivileged animals.
Dr. Stewart said, “Anyone has the power to help. You can volunteer at a rescue shelter. You can donate money or time. As that generosity spreads, it helps fuel the positive energy in the world.”
What a wonderful vet! Watch the video below:
