What is that Ingredient? – Truth about Pet Food

It’s not as simple to understand as it should be. Chicken or Beef listed on a pet food label can be VERY different than Chicken or Beef listed on a human food label. The reason: pet food ingredients have their own distinct definitions (that significantly varies from the same ingredient in human food).

The actual pet food ingredient definitions are copyright protected (by AAFCO), we cannot provide them for you here. But we can provide you with the requirements and allowances per the legal definition.

Only the generic names of animal protein/fat ingredients are listed below – such as “Meat” – to keep the list shorter. As example to learn about the legal definition of ‘Chicken’ or ‘Turkey’ – click on “Poultry“.

Wishing you and your pet the best –
