Many moons ago we adopted our first dog from our local animal shelter. We named him Linus and the rest is history. Now, we’re life long dog lovers!

That being said we want to do what we can to connect others with their future canine pals.

When we started searching for a rescue dog we hit up petfinder.com. Fortunately, for us their database covered many shelters and rescues in California.

However, when I tried to do the same and search for dogs for adoption in Nunavut, Canada I was unable to find rescues in their database.

So what’s dog lover to do?

I scoured the internet and only found a few resources for Nunavut dog shelters and rescues but hey! a few is better than none.

Below is our short list of rescues, shelters, and others resources for Nunavut Canada.

A Little Bit About Nunavut

Before we get to that list here’s a bit of information about Nunavut.

Nunavut is the largest and northernmost territory of Canada. It was separated officially from the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999, via the Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act, which provided this territory to the Inuit for independent government. The boundaries had been drawn in 1993.

Nunavut being the northernmost province in Canada and having a small population of just over 40,000 probably explains why we were unable to find many shelters or rescues in the area.

Dogs For Adoption In Nunavut

Below are all of the organizations in Nunavut from which you can adopt a dog.

Please continue on to each individual organization’s website by clicking on their name to see dogs they have available for adoption or to learn more about the organization and their mission.

Adopting is a great way of bringing home a dog in need of a loving home.

Consider checking with the organizations in your area on a weekly basis if you’re looking for a specific breed before you decide to go out and buy a puppy from a breeder.

You know what they say – ‘Adopt Before You Shop!’

Dog Rescues And Shelters In Nunavut

Sorry guys, I was only able to locate the above four rescues in the Nunavut area.

Hopefully if you’re looking for a dog you’re able to find one at these shelters. If not, you might expand your search to the other provinces.

FAQs

What Is The 3 3 3 rule of rescue dogs?

When a dog is getting used to her new home she will often follow the 3 3 3 rule.

  • 3 days of feeling overwhelmed and nervous in their new situation.
  • 3 weeks of settling into their new forever home.
  • 3 months of building trust and bonding with you.

The first 3 days can be very stressful and a lot of our dogs experience anxiety, diarrhea, and other signs of nervousness.

How Many Dogs Are Euthanized In Shelters?

According to the ASPCA, 390,000 dogs are euthanized in United States Shelters every year!

A very sad statistic. One more thing I’d like to add. I used to rescue litters from one of our local shelters. I was horrified when I heard if I or another volunteer foster didn’t take the litter immediately then the puppies were euthanized.

What Is The Busiest Day At Animal Shelters?

The busiest day at animal shelters is July 5th according to the Humane Society.

And why not? This is Independence Day in the United States. My Raven is terrified of the loud fireworks going off on the fourth.

Be safe with your dogs on the fourth of July.

Final Thoughts

While there aren’t too many rescues or shelters in Nunavut there are some.

If you’re in the area and you are looking for a dog please check out these shelters and rescues first.

If you don’t see a dog you’d like to adopt then be patient or try searching for other shelters in cities a little further away from your home.
