Spinach is a superfood for dogs when fed in small quantities. It’s not an ingredient that you’ll want to add to every meal, but it offers a lot of nutritional benefits when added to treats. Spinach is high in vitamins A,B, C and K. It’s also a good source of antioxidants and beta-carotene.

Speaking of superfood ingredients, zucchini is packed with nutritional benefits for dogs. One cup of raw zucchini only has about 20 calories, and it’s low in fat and cholesterol. This vegetable is great for your dog’s digestion and is rich in potassium, zinc, manganese, magnesium, copper and phosphorus.

Recipe: Healthy Dog Treats with Spinach and Zucchini

These treats are healthy and safe for virtually any pup. They’re a great option for dogs with digestive issues and offer a low calorie snack for pets on a diet. There are about 45 calories in each treat, but you can easily break them into smaller pieces to offer less calories per treat.

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 large carrot (shredded)
  • 1 zucchini (shredded)
  • 1 cup baby spinach (chopped)

Preheat your oven to 350˚F.

Whisk the pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs together in a mixing bowl. Gradually add the oats and flour and mix until a stiff dough forms.

Finally, add the carrot, zucchini and spinach. Knead the dough until the vegetables are evenly distributed.

Drop tablespoon-sized balls of dough on a well greased cookie sheet. Bake in the 350˚ oven for 20-25 minutes. You’ll know when the treats are finished because the edges will begin to turn brown.
