Honey Chicken Homemade Dog Cancer Diet – Top Dog Tips

Dogs with cancer should eat a special diet that is nutritionally balanced and easy to digest. Their entire body is working overtime to help fight the cancer, making them weak. This homemade dog cancer diet is made with limited ingredients that are easily digestible, exceptionally palatable and packed with nutrition.

Oftentimes, dogs with cancer begin to lose weight. Some cancer treatments can also cause a dog to lose his appetite. For these reasons, one of the most common goals for dog food formulated for pets with cancer is to maintain a healthy weight.

It is also critically important that you create a recipe that will meet your dog’s nutritional needs. If not, your pup will quickly become nutrient deficient. This would make it even harder for his body to fight the cancer.

Honey Chicken Homemade Dog Cancer Diet

homemade dog cancer dietIn a well-known study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 27 home-cooked recipes for dogs with cancer were evaluated. These recipes came from books and internet sources. Unfortunately, none of the recipes met the minimum nutritional contents required for a commercial adult dog food diet.

It is extremely difficult to formulate a recipe that will meet all of your dog’s nutritional needs. If you’re considering feeding your pet a homemade dog cancer diet, you must work with a veterinarian or canine nutritionist.

How much to feed: I recommend feeding about 1/2 cup of food for every 20-25 pounds of body weight. This is just a guideline. Lazier pets and senior dogs may not need as many. It is extremely important to consult your veterinarian about the best serving size for your dog.

All dogs have specific nutritional needs, especially dogs with cancer. Your dogs’ needs will depend on many factors including the type of cancer he has, the treatment he is undergoing, his age, breed and ideal weight. For this reason, it is imperative that you consult your veterinarian about the appropriate serving size for your dog.

How to store: You can store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days or freeze them and they’ll keep for up to 3 months. Keep in mind that this recipe includes no preservatives, so it won’t last nearly as long as commercial dog food.
