One dog narrowly escaped an almost certain death thanks to his vigilant furry family member. It’s a recent story out of the Isle of Man, a Channel Island between England and Ireland, that’s grabbed the attention of die-hard dog lovers worldwide.

In March, a member of the public was strolling beside the Douglas Inner Harbor and encountered a distraught black Newfoundland. The distressed dog wasn’t accompanied by an owner and was insistent on immediate attention. So, the concerned citizen followed the Newfie, who led him directly to a Golden Retriever struggling in the water.

A Facebook post by the Douglas Coastguard Rescue Team reveals the details. The member of the public quickly alerted bystanders to contact the Coastguard. However, realizing the gravity of the situation, the citizen didn’t want to wait for authorities and jumped into action.

According to the post, the good Samaritan ”got onto a boat and was able to grab hold of the dog as he was going down the Harbour in the flow of the river. At this point, the dog was starting to go under so was lucky to be saved.”

Soon after, the Douglas Coastguard arrived at the scene and continued the rescue and recovery. The “paw patrol” safely hauled the dog onshore. According to the Facebook post, the coastguard then collected the Newfoundland to reunite him with his Golden mate at their station. Both dogs had the same owner, and the police located the pups’ parent to collect them.

The rescue team concluded in its Facebook post, “We would like to thank the member of the public for his swift action which undoubtedly saved the life of 1 very lucky dog.”
