10 Most Indestructible Dog Beds (2020 Reviews and Buyer’s Guide)

[ad_1]

If your dog is a chewer who keeps destroying all those dog beds you keep buying, it means regular brands are no good no more. Fortunately, there are indestructible dog beds specifically manufactured to be tough and are nearly impossible for dogs to chew through.

Heavy duty dog beds tend to use minimalist design. Most indestructible dog beds are made from a few hard, reinforced materials such as brass, heavy aluminum or PVC tubes for bed’s framing. For the fabric part, most will use ripstop fabrics, which are woven using reinforced techniques (making them resistant to chewing, tearing, and ripping) and mixing those with some fleece and soft cotton. If any, metal zippers will be added, too.

Chew proof dog beds are not common, but there are a few good brands, and below we’ve done a round-up of the best indestructible dog beds review that are worth the price.

Why Some Dogs Destroy Beds?

Some dogs have a habit of chewing on things and destroying them, regardless of what they are. This often includes more than dog beds: seat covers, seat belts, food bowls and crates or playpens. Chewing on things is a common and costly problem for dog owners, and it can also be dangerous for dogs  due to potential injuries, blockage and poisoning.

Before you buy an indestructible dog bed for your pooch, try also to find the cause why your dog behaves this way and what you can do to stop this destructive behavior. Below are some of the most common causes why dogs chew beds.

Too Much Energy

Some dogs destroy things because of the pent-up energy, which is especially common with active breeds that require a lot of daily exercise but aren’t receive enough.

You can prevent this by making sure that your dog gets plenty of exercise time on a daily basis. Take him on (more or longer) walks, provide more playtime and training.

If that is not enough or you don’t have enough time to do it, pet owners with a house and backyard can install a dog door to let the pup go outside whenever he wants. Automatic fetch toys and similar products may also help with your dog’s built-up energy.

Anxiety

Anxiety is another common reason why dogs chew and destroy beds. Perhaps the most common is separation anxiety, which often shows in dogs that aren’t used to being on their own. Other signs of separation anxiety include excessive whining and barking, toilet “accidents” even if the dog is housebroken, obsessive pacing and trying to escape.

Dealing with a dog’s separation anxiety is not easy but there are a few things you can do to make it better. Most importantly, make sure that you leave the house and come back in the most low-key way possible. Training your dog by giving him a treat every time you leave can also help, while some dogs can benefit from certain anxiety medications.

Fabric Sucking

Sucking on fabrics is a common issue with dogs that have been taken off weaning too early. This can make the dog lick, suck and chew at fabrics, especially wool. They often do it with objects like towels, blankets and dog bed bedding. This behavior can become compulsive and destructive.

This can be a difficult issue to fix on your own, so the best way to deal with this problem is to find a reputable canine behaviorist.

Teething Problem

If your dog is just a puppy, then his chewing problem is probably caused by teething. Just like teething babies, puppies will also chew on everything to get relief. It is normal behavior and your pooch should outgrow it pretty soon.

While a puppy would probably not be able to seriously damage dog beds, it is better to teach him the proper chewing behavior from the start. Get him plenty of chew toys to keep his attention from household items.

How to Choose the Best Indestructible Dog Bed

How to Choose the Most Indestructible Dog Bed?

Due to their more unique design and the heavy duty materials used, there are several factors to consider to purchase the most durable, long-lasting indestructible dog bed.

Outer Materials

The best outer materials of pet beds for power-chewers and any dogs who like to chew on beds are ballistic nylon, denim and canvas.

Ballistic nylon is durable and, more importantly, not a favorite material for dogs to chew on. Even if your pooch decides to chew on nylon of the bed, the material is very tough and durable enough to last longer than other fabrics.

Canvas is also pretty durable and another material that dogs avoid chewing on. While canvas is not as tough as ballistic nylon, it can still withstand a lot of damage from a dog’s jaw before it completely succumbs.

Denim is much weaker than either ballistic nylon or canvas, but it’s more affordable (making dog bed cheaper), and dogs are actually the most averse to chewing on this type of material.

Inner Materials

Outer materials are most important, so do not worry about having heavy duty inner materials in an indestructible bed for dogs. Except for elevated dog beds, most dog beds are stuffed with various things for the comfort of the dog, or to provide orthopedic support for ailing pets.

While the type of inner material is not important when it comes to your dog’s chewing habits since he will destroy any stuffing without a problem if he gets to it, it is important to choose the inner material that will make your pooch the most comfortable.

Some common materials used to stuff chew proof dog beds include various types of foams, as well as polyester fill and cotton. The most popular is memory foam, which is a great choice for older dogs and dogs with joint issues, and is often used in orthopedic dog beds, but it’s also the most expensive option.

Size of the Dog Bed

It’s not enough for a dog bed to be durable, chew-proof, long-lasting and comfortable; it also needs to be the right size. Obviously, this will depend on the size of your dog, as well as the space he likes to take up when he sleeps, and the way the dog sleeps.

For example, some small breeds like to have a lot of space to spread across, while some large dogs like to curl up and don’t need a lot of space.

Another factor to consider here is the thickness of the bed. Some dogs prefer beds that are thicker and fuller, while others don’t like thick beds they have to climb on and prefer sleeping on thin beds. Of course, thicker beds are harder to chew on and destroy, so they are probably a better choice for chewers.

Additional Features

There are other factors to take into account to pick the best indestructible dog bed for your pup, depending on your and the dog’s needs. For example, some chew proof dog beds are also waterproof, which can be particularly important if your dog is prone to accidents.

Because washing a dog bed can sometimes be a big chore, how easy the pet bed is to clean is another thing for dog owners to consider. Some beds come with removable covers that are machine-washable, others have to be washed manually.

While most durable dog beds have heavy duty metal zippers, it’s recommended to look for those that don’t have any visible zippers or come without any zippers at all. With dog beds, zippers are the weak-point, and are usually very interesting for your dog to chew on, which can be dangerous and also help your pooch destroy the bed quicker.

Price

Even though the price shouldn’t be the most important factor in your decision, it certainly has to be considered. In our review below, we’ve considered the cost-to-value ratio.

Similar to regular dog beds, indestructible ones can be very cheap yet still heavy duty due to their minimalistic design, but the comfort aspect usually suffers. Chew proof dog beds that are also comfortable or orthopedic will be some of the most expensive on the market.

The best thing is to determine your budget beforehand so you don’t overspend. Luckily, many affordable chew proof dog beds offer similar or sometimes better quality than even more expensive products, as you’ll see in the below roundup.

And now that you know what features to look for when you shop for the most indestructible dog bed, there are several good choices out there. With that in mind, we will try to make your shopping easier and carefully review some of the best indestructible dog beds you can find online.

The Best Indestructible Dog Beds

1 Blueberry Pet Heavy Duty Dog Bed
by Blueberry Pet

These beds from the company Blueberry Pet have earned a great reputation among pet owners. So if you are looking for a stylish, bolstered dog bed that is comfortable but also durable enough to deal with chewing, clawing and other destructive behavior, this should be your choice.

However, it can only be your choice if you have a small dog that weighs up to 11 pounds since this bed only comes in two sizes – small and medium. On the other hand, this bed is available in many different patterns and colors that can fit any décor.

Keep in mind that you will receive the bed as a rolled-up cover and have to stuff it yourself. The cover is made of thick and durable microsuede fabric which is very comfortable as well. The stuffing is an eco-friendly and recyclable microfiber that easily takes the shape of the sofa when you put it in the cover.

Although my dog loved the bed, it seemed a bit lumpy to me, which was probably the result of having to stuff it myself. This is my biggest problem with the bed since everything else seemed pretty great, including the durability of the materials.

» PROS: Comes in Numerous Patterns and Colors, Durable, Comfortable, Eco-Friendly, Machine Washable Cover

« CONS: A Bit Pricey, Only Two Sizes, Not for Large Breeds, Stuffing and Cover Come Separately

2 Kuranda Elevated Dog Bed

The company Kuranda comes with a great reputation, and this is the most popular indestructible and elevated dog bed on this list because it is easily the most durable option you can find due to its simple design. It comes in 6 different sizes, ranging from mini to XX-large. It is also available in four different colors and, in my opinion, has the most stylish looks of all elevated dog beds I have seen.

The frame is made of high-quality PVC and can support dogs up to 100 pounds of weight. The bed is also lightweight enough to be very portable, so you can use it indoors and outdoors. The fabric used for this bed is called Cordura, which is as durable as canvas and abrasion-resistant. It also provides traction to make it easier for your dog to get on and off the bed.

While the bed is very comfortable, it can be a bit problematic for dogs to climb on the bed if they have joint issues. Another issue I had, a common problem for elevated dog beds, is the assembly. While the assembly should be easy and you do get instructions with the product, you may need some help if you are not a handy person.

» PROS: Available in Multiple Sizes and Colors, Stylish, Durable, Comfortable, Cooling Effect, Easy to Clean, Portable

« CONS: A Bit Expensive, Requires Assembly, Not the Best Choice for Dogs with Joint Issues

3 Dogbed4less Premium Tough Dog Bed

One of my personal favorites when it comes to durable, indestructible dog beds comes from Dog Bed 4 Less. This is one of the best orthopedic beds overall, which means it is great for dogs with joint issues and arthritis. The reason lies in the high-quality memory foam the bed is stuffed with.

You can get this bed in four different sizes, but even the smallest is pretty large with dimensions of 40 X 35 X 4 inches. Unfortunately, the bed only comes in one color – navy blue. The cover is removable and made out of denim, so it is a good choice for chewers. The one problem with this bed comes from the fact that the cover has an external zipper.

You will receive two external covers with this bed, both of which are machine washable. The cover is durable, while the bed is one of the most comfortable and my dog loves it. The bed comes with a waterproof internal liner but some dog owners pointed out that the liner is not fully waterproof as advertised.

» PROS: Available in Multiple Sizes, Durable, Waterproof, Comfortable, Orthopedic, Machine Washable Cover

« CONS: A Bit Expensive, One Color Only, External Zipper, Reports of Inner Liner Not Being Waterproof

4 K9 Ballistics Tough Rectangle Nesting Dog Bed
by K9 Ballistics

The K9 Ballistics is a well-known name in the pet bed industry and this bed is one of their best products for dogs that like to destroy things. The cover is made of 1680D nylon, which is tough in itself, although not as durable as some other beds on my list. However, the main benefit comes from the rip-stop pattern that prevents small rips from expanding.

The interior is filled with poly fiber fill, which is quite comfortable for most dogs. However, the bed comes with more outer material that stuffing, so it can look a bit under-stuffed even though the bed is pretty thick and supportive.

The bed comes in a multitude of sizes and colors, so you should have no problem finding the one that suits your needs. The cover is water-resistant but not actually waterproof. On the other hand, the bed has a Velcro strip instead of zippers, which can discourage your dog from chewing on it.

» PROS: Available in Many Sizes and Colors, Rip-Stop Technology, Comfortable, Velcro Strip Instead Off Zippers, Water-Resistant, Machine Washable Cover

« CONS: A Bit Expensive, Cover Not That Durable, Looks a Bit Under-Filled

5 Coolaroo Long-Lasting Elevated Dog Bed
by Coolaroo

Elevated dog beds are, in general, a much better choice for heavy chewers and dogs that simple will not stop such behavior. This cot-like bed made by Coolaroo is similar to Kuranda’s above, except it’s cheaper and not as heavy duty. This bed is available in three different sizes – small, medium and large. You can also get it in various colors and use it both indoors and outdoors since it is pretty lightweight and portable.

The bed’s frame is made of powerful powder-coated steel. Meanwhile, your dog will certainly be comfortable on high-density polyethylene fabric that allows the cool air to flow, making this bed perfect for hot temperatures. The fabric is elevated 7 inches of the ground, so it may not be the best choice for dogs with arthritis and other joint issues since they might have problems getting on the bed.

The fabric is resistant to mold and mildew but can also keep your dog away from fleas and mites. You can easily maintain the fabric and wash it with a hose in a matter of minutes. One major issue I had with this bed was assembly. It was complicated and took a lot of time to get it right. Some reviewers also complained about the durability of the fabric but those reviews are in minority and I personally had no problem with it.

» PROS: Available in Multiple Sizes and Colors, Affordable, Durable, Portable, Easy to Clean, Cooling Effect, Resistant to Mold and Mildew

« CONS: Requires Assembly, Not a Good Choice for Dogs with Joint Issues, Some Reports of Fabric Tearing Up

6 K&H Pet Products Original Pet Cot for Dogs

This is a unique elevated dog bed/cot from K&H brand because it comes with a two-tone design – the center panel is made of breathable mesh that cools off your pooch in high temperatures, while the wide perimeter band is stronger and offers additional support. The fabric used is 600-Denier fabric, which is also waterproof, removable and washable.

The bed comes in four different sizes but there are no different colors available. The frame is sturdy and, together with the cover, it can withstand up to 200 pounds of weight.

Like other elevated beds, it may not be the best choice for dogs with joint issues. And it also requires assembly, which is simple but still takes time and effort. I have used this bed for 2 weeks and it seemed pretty durable to me, but some dog owners reported that the cover was not that durable and was torn apart after some time.

» PROS: Available in Multiple Sizes, Stylish, Durable, Comfortable, Cooling Effect, Easy to Clean, Portable

« CONS: Only Comes in One Color, Requires Assembly, Not the Best Choice for Dogs with Joint Issues, Some Reports of Torn Up Cover

7 PetFusion Ultimate Chew Proof Dog Bed
by PetFusion

The main feature of PetFusion ultimate dog bed, the thing that makes it nearly indestructible, is the chew-resistant cover that is both comfortable and durable at the same time. The cover is also machine washable and you can get replacement covers if you need them.

In addition to its powerful cover, this bed also has a water-resistant liner. The bed is filled with high-quality memory foam that provides comfort and helps reduce joint pain in dogs with arthritis and other similar conditions. The bed comes in four different sizes and three colors, with a bolstered design that can easily hold between 50 and 200 lbs of weight, depending on the bed size. This bed also comes with a 2-year warranty.

One of the downsides of this bed is the zipper, which is not as durable as I would have expected, especially considering the high price of the bed. I also didn’t like how noisy the fabric was.

» PROS: Available in Multiple Sizes and Colors, Stylish, Durable, Comfortable, Orthopedic, Cooling Effect, Water-Resistant, Machine Washable Cover, Non-Slip Bottom

« CONS: Expensive, Zipper Not Very Durable, Noisy Fabric

8 Milliard Premium Orthopedic Durable Dog Bed

Although this dog bed is not advertised as being indestructible, it is nonetheless one of the most durable dog beds you can find on the market. The bed comes in four different sizes ranging from small to extra large but it is only available in one color.

This bed has a tough but comfortable removable cover, made of polyester fibers that can withstand a certain amount of chewing and clawing. The cover is machine washable and water-resistant but not waterproof so it may not be the best choice if your dog is prone to accidents.

The bed is stuffed with dual-layer foam – the regular foam base topped by memory foam. Also, you don’t have to worry about the bed sliding around on smooth surfaces since the cover has a non-slip coating on the bottom. On the downside, the cover may shrink a bit after washing, which happened to me. Also, some users reported that the zippers on the cover were not really durable.

» PROS: Available in Multiple Sizes, Affordable, Comfortable, Orthopedic, Machine Washable Cover, Water-Resistant, Durable

« CONS: Only One Color Available, Cover May Shrink after Washing, Zippers Not Very Durable

9 Brindle Soft Memory Foam Dog Bed
by Brindle

This is another orthopedic dog bed, this time from Brindle, that is also durable enough to deal with chewers and their constant attacks. The bed is available in many sizes and four different colors but I don’t really like how the bed looks.

Although the bed is not very stylish, at least for my taste, the more important thing is how it performs and that is a different story. The bed comes with a removable cover that is machine washable and has a non-slip bottom. The cover is made of soft and comfortable microsuede, which is also chew-resistant. The bed is filled with shredded memory foam, making it the perfect choice for senior dogs and dogs with joint issues or arthritis.

In addition to this, the bed also comes with a waterproof layer and has a pretty affordable price. The zipper remains hidden under the panel, which is another plus. However, some reviewers complained about receiving an under-filled product. I also didn’t like how the shredded foam felt and it was easy for the bed to become uneven after being used for some time.

» PROS: Available in Multiple Sizes and Colors, Affordable, Comfortable, Orthopedic, Waterproof, Machine Washable, Non-Slip Bottom

« CONS: Not Very Stylish, Some Reports of Receiving Under-Filled Bed, Shredded Foam May Become Uneven with Time

10Bolstered Dog Bed with Chew Proof Technology
by goDog

This dog bed was made by one of the most popular manufacturers of stuffed toys, so it is not a big surprise that they know their way around stuffing a dog bed as well. The bed is available in multiple sizes and a few different colors.

These beds are not nearly indestructible and durable as some of the other options on my list but it is one of the most durable plush beds on the market thanks to the special Chew Guard technology. The outer material is soft and comfortable, with a non-skid bottom. The bed is stuffed with an unspecified material that is pretty comfortable and my dog enjoyed spending time on this bed.

On the downside, the bed is not waterproof or even water-resistant. And while the bed is not as durable as others I reviewed, it may be worth trying it out if your dog is not that destructive since it comes at a very affordable price.

» PROS: Comes in Various Sizes and Colors, Affordable, Comfortable, Durable, Non-Slip Bottom, Machine Washable

« CONS: Not as Durable as Other Options, Not Waterproof

Conclusion

Finding a durable dog bed that can withstand constant chewing and clawing is difficult but possible. And while there are no 100% indestructible beds that strong power chewers wouldn’t be able to chew through given enough time, some dog beds are much more durable than others. The above guide and indestructible dog bed reviews is a good starting point for dog owners to find and buy a perfect bed for their heavy chewers.
