Halloween’s just right around the corner!

You’ve probably been dying to decorate your house ever since October came around but just hold up a sec.

Before you whip out that “Halloween Lovers Club” banner, the fake cobwebs, and the skeletons in your closet (wink!), why not start the celebration by letting your little furry monster friend in on the fun?

Whether your pooch is born on October 31st or you’re bringing him home on D-day, you can celebrate this spooky season all year long by giving her the perfect Halloween dog name!

In this article, we compiled a monster list of spooky, horror-themed, and Halloween dog names to get the paw-ty started.

How to Pick the Perfect Halloween Dog Name

Do you know that a quarter of Americans say Halloween is one of their favorite holidays?

You’re probably not the only one thinking about what to call their pets in honor of this fang-tastic event!

But before you get all skel-excited about picking out dog names, let us give you some tips (or tricks!) on giving the perfect moniker for your pooch.

It has to reflect your pet’s character

Observing your pup’s behavior and character will give you a good idea of what name best suits her.

But there are two ways of doing this—you can either make it fun in a tongue-in-cheek way or… just creep it real.

Naming your Pomeranian “Boo” will make everybody hear it go “Aww…” but calling her “Fang” or “Monster” can make people laughin’ ’til they are coffin. Your choice!

Make sure it’s easy to say and understand

Sure, it’s cute and cackle-worthy, but can your dog even understand it?

Try to say it out loud. If it rolls right off the tongue, and your dog perks her ears up when you’re saying it, then it might be the one.

But calling her “Mrs. Frankenstein” or “Bride of Chuckie” might not make the cut. It might just be too long. You can do better than that!

If possible, try to stick to names with only 1 to 2 syllables. “Misty” or “Wolfie” might just do the trick!

Avoid command-like names

Regardless if it’s a Halloween dog name or just a typical ol’ moniker, a command-sounding one may confuse your pooch.

“Joe” can sound like a “no!” or “Jay” can be mistaken for “stay!”

Consider something that they can only understand as their name. Plus, you’d surely want something unique for your pet.

Be proud and let everyone know in the dog park that you and your pooch love Halloween too much that you just have to name her like so.

Trust your gut!

After browsing through our monster list of Halloween dog names below, we’re pretty sure you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Just keep your furry friend in mind and trust your gut. You’ll know when you see it!

How to Teach your Pooch His Halloween Dog Name (or any names for that matter!)

Now that you’ve picked the perfect Halloween dog name for your pooch, it’s time to teach it to her.

Don’t worry, most pups pick up their names in no time. But here are some tips and tricks for you to give ’em a headstart.

Practice makes perfect!

Just know that it’s easy for them to get distracted especially with all the decorations around the house. Don’t worry, you’ll still get their attention for sure.

Say the name again and again and again (but not without pause!) until they look at you.

Once they do, give them praise like “Good Job!” or a validating sound like “Yes!” or a click (using a clicker) to let them know they did well.

You can also give them Halloween treats that are safe for dogs for a little reward!

Keep their attention on you

Don’t mix up teaching their names with making them do another trick before handing the treats as it might only confuse them.

They may think you’re giving them treats for sitting or staying and not for paying attention to their name.

If your dog keeps getting distracted, try to walk her away from the distraction until you got her full attention.

Be positive

Keep a positive and perky tone when saying their name. This will help them associate the name you have chosen for them with positive things.

Feed them, play with them, or pet them while calling their name. Don’t shout!

As soon as you get the response you want when you’re calling her name, you can try to practice with her in a larger space with some distractions to see if she remembers. Just be patient!

Following these steps on teaching your furry monster friend her Halloween dog name will surely guarantee her knowing it before trickin’ or treatin’ in the neighborhood!
