Proposed New York Law Would Give Tax Credit to Those Who Adopt Pets

A newly proposed New York law would give tax credits to people who adopt their pets from animal shelters.

The proposed law would give a tax credit of $125 per dog or cat adopted from an area shelter.

The law is designed to promote adoption and rescue instead of buying from breeders. Animal Care & Control of New York City alone took in more than 30,000 homeless dogs and cats last year.

The proposed bill, which would be the first bill of its kind in the nation to give a tax credit for adopting a homeless animal, has garnered strong support from New York lawmakers as well as animal rights activist groups.
