Upcoming AAFCO Meeting – Listen Live – Truth about Pet Food

The next AAFCO meeting will begin this Thursday, August 4, 2022. The meeting is being held in St. Louis, MO. Pet owners can listen to the live meetings free of charge, however only paid admission attendees (either webinar or in attendance) are allowed to give a comment. Admission to the webinar or the in person meeting is $550.00. (In other words, it costs $550.00 in order to give a comment to any decision AAFCO is considering.)

And this year AAFCO provides multiple phone numbers to call in and listen to the meeting live. Click Here to view the phone options and required passcode.
The two meetings that are of most significance to pet owners are the Ingredient Definitions Committee and the Pet Food Committee.
Ingredient Definitions Committee Agenda
3:30 – 5 PM CT, Thursday Aug 4
Of significance to pet owners, this meeting will provide an “update” on any work that has been done towards updating animal product ingredients (all meat/meat meal ingredients). Only 15 minutes have been provided for this update, we don’t expect to hear much work has been done since the last meeting in January.
Something strange on the agenda for this meeting under a category of “Training Proposals” is “Feed ingredients encouraging sustainability”. A subtopic under this discussion is “Rendering”. No information to what this discussion will be about was provided, it’s puzzling (and suspicious). We will be paying close attention to this discussion.
Pet Food Committee Meeting Agenda
10 AM to Noon CT, Friday Aug 5
The meeting will discuss slight changes made to Human Grade pet food “Guidelines”. We don’t believe these changes will lessen the quality of Human Grade pet food. They can be read – starting on page 7 – of the AAFCO Agenda Book.
FDA will give an update to what they have been working on since the last meeting in January regarding existing copper levels in pet food.
And this AAFCO Committee will also provide an update to Pet Food Label Modernization efforts. AAFCO has been working on these label changes for 7 years (since 2015).
And AAFCO will provide an update about pages of their own website – AAFCO Talks Pet Food. Pages within this section of the AAFCO website are outdated, and actually provide false information to readers. We hope to learn AAFCO plans are to update this website soon.
We will be in attendance at the meeting, and will provide pet owners with details as soon as possible.
